Damn I’ve lost my torch!

This is a scenario that many divers have faced, unfortunately gear that is clipped to your BCD can become caught on something and come off without you realising. Alternatively, you may be looking for a wreck that you know is in the area in which you are diving, but you are not sure exactly where it is. The SSI Search and Recovery speciality is designed to help you in such cases.

As the title suggests this speciality begins by looking at the different search patterns that you can use to try and find a lost item. You will learn which patterns suit particular conditions and type of item that you are searching for.

Once you have located an item it may be too heavy for you to carry yourself e.g. a lost anchor or if you are really lucky a ship’s bell!. In such a situation you will learn how to rescue the item using a lift bag or SMB to help raise it to the surface.

This is a valuable speciality for all divers and is especially relevant to wreck divers who may wish to recover items from a wreck.

• The SSI Search and Recovery speciality course costs 190€ and includes two dives open water dives. The course can be completed in one day and is open to any diver holding an Open Water certification.
