How do I get back to the boat?

Almost all experienced divers carry a compass with them when they are diving as an aid to navigation. However, a compass if of no use if you do not know how to use it and what do you do if you have forgotten it? The SSI Navigation speciality course is designed to help you with both these questions. So whilst this course is a must if you are thinking of becoming a professional dive guide it actually teaches skills that are essential to all divers.

If there is reduced visibility, or a terrain that is similar throughout the dive, the course teaches you how to use a compass underwater as an aid to navigation. The course also teaches you about the navigation patterns that you can use to ensure your safe return to your exit point.

You may have wondered how your dive guide always seems to know where they are and where to look for interesting things. This is because many dive guides use natural navigation techniques. In addition to using a compass for navigation, dive guides also make a mental note of the key features of different dive sites. The course teaches you what to look for on a dive site so that you know where you are and what to look for on your return to your exit point.
