Once you venture into the world of extended range diving then a good understanding of the use and benefits of enriched air nitrox diving is vital. The problem with breathing just normal air is that you can become susceptible to nitrogen narcosis at greater depths and your bottom time becomes very limited. By using enriched air nitrox you reduce the likelihood of nitrogen narcosis and increase your allowable bottom time.

The SSI Extended Range Nitrox Diving speciality allows you to plan and carry out dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres using nitrox mixes to a maximum of 50% oxygen. However, it is vital that when using nitrox mixes with a higher oxygen content than the 21% in normal air you understand that there are also downsides that you need to be aware of. This speciality is important because as well as introducing you to extended range diving it gives you much more understanding of what gases you are breathing and why. The course is an important first step on the path to becoming a technical diver and diving even deeper and for longer.

  • The SSI Extended Range Nitrox Diving speciality costs 450€ and includes four open water dives. The course can be completed in two days and is open to any diver holding the required prerequisites.
